Office of the Textile Commissioner, Ministry of textiles, Govt. of India with SASMIRA (The Synthetic & Art Silk Mills' Research Association) is organizing a Seminar on Agrotextiles : Emerging Opportunities jointly in association with FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry)

-
To generate awareness about the potential of agrotextile products
-
To highlight the present global and domestic screnario of agrotextile
industries
-
To disseminte information on entrepreneurship in agrotextile
-
To emphasise on the infrastructural requirement viz., raw material and
machinery for agrotextile industries
-
To increase awareness about the application of agrotextiles amongst end user
industry.
-
To highlight the Indian research on agrotextiles and activities of COE (Centre
of Excellence) Agrotextiles.

This Seminar will focus on application of technical textiles
to all the areas related agriculture and allied activities. The Agro Textile
sector comprises of all textiles that are used in growing, harvesting,
protection and storage of either crops or animals. It includes diverse items
such as fishing nets and fish lines, ropes, shade fabrics, mulch mats, woven
and non-woven covers for crops, bird protection nets, etc., Agro textiles are
driving the agro sector profitably by improving the productivity and reducing
the need for chemicals. Areas of agrotextile application can be broadly
identified as Agro-textiles for Crop Production, Agro-textiles for
Horticulture, Floriculture and Forestry, Agro-textiles for Animal Husbandry and
Aquaculture and Agro-textiles for Agro-Engineering related applications.
Textiles in different forms are exclusively used for many agricultural end uses
that include knitted, woven, non-woven, extruded sheet, moulded product, ropes,
belt, etc.

FICCI-WRC is organizing this Seminar to explore the enormous
potential of Agro Textiles. The Seminar also aims to provide a unique platform
to comprehensively address the concerns and bring together the stake-holders
viz., the industry, agro products manufacturers, agro processing goods
manufacturers, fishing industry professionals, investors, financial
institutions, warehousing companies, engineers, technicians and consultants
working on all types of agro textiles. The agro-textile market is expected to
grow from 1615 thousand tones (US $ 6.5 Billion) in 2005 to 1958 thousand tones
(US $ 8.1 billion) in 2010. This growth is expected to be at the average rate
of 3.9 % per annum. However, if we consider the region wise growth, it may be
seen that in the developing regions like China, Brazil and particularly India
with CAGR 7.8%, there is a tremendous potential for consumption of
agro-textiles.
The uses of non-woven especially spun-bonded fabrics are
increasing. Few of the popular agro-textile products are shade nets, harvesting
nets, nets for crop protection, mulch mats, textiles for food packaging,
fishing nets, tarpaulins and their likes. Apart from these products, few of the
other technical textiles that aid agriculture are geotextiles (soil covers),
protective textiles (agriculture workwear) and industrial textiles (belts,
hoses and filters).
