Gadag
Karnataka
Lying in the cotton (Jayadhar variety) belt of Karnataka in South India, people
in Gadag are engaged in mainly two professions - agriculture and saree weaving.
Sarees traditionally called 'Gaadi Dhadi,' have been worn by women from
Northern Karnataka and the neighbouring Maharashtra State.
Artisans in this region have been weaving sarees for more than a century now,
and this cluster though specialized in cotton weaving, has diversified into
mercerized yarn and silk weaving also.
Also know as Gadugina Seeri, the sarees in cotton exude lustrous shine with
their borders and pallus that add intrinsic value to each creation by the local
artisans. The colours in a combination that matches the surroundings have found
conspicuous presence in the weaves that are profound in quality and richness.
Worn during traditional, formal or celebratory occasions, Gadag sarees exhibit
harmonious colors, quality and richness. They have special vernacular names
like Kasakasi, Peta Dhadi and Pattedanchu.
Buying their wonderful creations will boost the local weaver community
economically and also ensure their glorious tradition continues for generations
to come, wear and appreciate the six or six and a half yard magic in hand woven
excellence!
