Kurinjipadi
Tamil Nadu
Adapting with time and tide is what Kurinjipadi cluster has shown for others to
follow. Kurinjipadi handloom cluster has churned out best seller products like
sarees, dhoties, towels, lungis and of course, the best seller chequered
shirts, from decade to decade as its history states.
Early 1950s saw this cluster churning out Koorai sarees, Kundanji Dhothies and
Kambi / Dhotis Chittai towels as they were in vogue till 1960. During that
phase dhotis and towels were the two varieties of handlooms produced leading in
to the next decade till 1970 when this cluster entered chequered shirting
production also popularly known as Bleeding Madras which found big markets in
the U.S.A.
Production of low cost lungis during 1970s and 80s in 60s x 40s x 72s reed with
low texture found markets demanding for more. Export markets like Singapore,
Sri Lanka and Malaysia during the 1980s sought high texture quality in 60s x
40s x 80s reed.
Around this time Payadi Lungi variety was introduced with heavy texture with mat
weave having double ends on equal proportion of white and color. Payadi Lungi
bears design resembling a mat.
