Effluents from textile dyeing industries consist of high amount of inorganic salts like sodium chloride, and sodium sulphate. The waste water discharged from the textile chemical processing industries should be treated so as to protect our surroundings from pollution problems. Of all the activities of the textile industry, chemical processing causes 70% of the total pollution. To reduce the environmental burden of their discharges, companies need to adopt processes and install an 'Effluent Treatment Plant'. They are used to conserve natural resources, minimize losses and maximize profits. Design is the heart of the Effluent Treatment Plant. A judiciously designed plant can achieve top most results at least cost and least maintenance.

Case study (Kunal Enviro Engineers):

Kunal Enviro Engineers had been assigned to design and manufacture Effluent Treatment Plant for Century Textiles for the Denim Project at Satrati, near Indore. The plant was designed taking in to consideration the fluctuating characteristics of effluent and available space. The process used was Activated Sludge with Kunal highly efficient Low Speed Aerators. The other equipment supplied was Mixers, Tube Settlers, Clariflocculators and Clarifiers. Emphasis was made on treating the waste water further to recycle / reuse the same thus conserving precious water.

Understanding the science and working of the plant will help to optimize its operation, and improve its performance. Minimization of wastes will save money up to 1% of turnover, either as an extra profit or in reduced operating costs. An effective Effluent Treatment Plant will bring forth a number of benefits like:

  • Reduction in operating costs.
  • Improved company image.
  • Effective compliance with the law.

Suggestions by Mr. Anil Tijoriwala, Kunal Enviro Engineers:

By virtue of his vast experience Mr. Anil Tijoriwala has designed many Effluent Treatment Plants, including large ones for textile industries, which has been facing problems on effluent for the last many years. While sharing his views with Fibre2Fashion.com, Mr. Tijoriwala offers some valuable inputs for industries.

  • The Effluent Treatment Plants are the least attended plants. More stress should be made on maintenance and trouble shooting.
  • Proper training of personnel operating such plants is of utmost importance to achieve this goal.
  • Preventive measures, periodic maintenance and In-plant control are some of the methods ensuring smooth and economical operation. By proper In-plant control, both quality and quantity of the waste water can be reduced, thus, saving on operation and maintenance costs.
  • Waste Water treatment plant should be also looked upon as a part of the main plant; then and only then we will meet the challenging task of combating this menace of alarmingly increasing pollution.

Effluent treatment plants are a feasible and ongoing solution for minimizing industrial waster water pollution. Everyone concerned with the manufacturing processes like operators, supervisors, engineers, and managers needs to be aware of their environmental responsibilities and be involved in the process.
