Human body needs to get enough
oxygen. When a person does hard exercises, the body is unable to get adequate
oxygen, causing lactic acid to be formed in the muscles and spread into the
bloodstream. This hurts the muscles and makes a person to develop fatigue. Breathing
becomes faster and harder forcing the body to slowdown, allowing it to replenish
its oxygen. Compression garments are clothing that help the wearer to avoid
getting tired while at the process of exercising.
Compression garments are skin tight
clothing which gives a mild compression on the body muscles to increase the
flow of blood to and from specific muscle group. These garments enable pressure
to be distributed across the body evenly, and accelerate blood flow and oxygen
delivery. Increased blood flow helps the body to reduce blood lactate, improve
performance, reduce the risk of injury, and help in muscle recovery during
exercise. They can be worn under regular clothing.
The garments are manufactured in
fine denier yarns produced from a blend of polyester and elastane. Elastane is
used in large quantities for maximum compression. Fit of these garments comes
in three sizes; small, medium, and large. Selection of the right size of
garment is usually done based on the Body Mass Index (BMI). Special panels are
also attached with the garments to compression of specific group of muscles.
Only high quality yarns are used in these garments so as to ensure its
durability even after repeated usage, and multiple washes.
Medical Applications:
Compression garments are used
in the medical field to prevent and treat burns, sprains, muscle strains, and
low blood pressure. They are used during post pregnancy period. They are also
used on long flights to avoid deep vein thrombosis. The garment helps to
control sudden, uncomfortable movements like coughing and sneezing which are
important during the post operative stage. These garments can be used when a
person undergoes a plastic surgery. Following the surgery, wearing a
compression garment helps to improve blood circulation, minimize swelling,
flush the body out of potentially harmful fluids, quicken up the recovery, and
enables the person to return back to his normal life style in a short span. The
garment also supports the surgical areas by making the skin to fit better to
its new contours.
Current Advancements:
Global market for compression
garments is estimated to be around $30 million. Compression garments of today
also provide other features like breathability, temperature regulation, anti
microbial protection, antistatic properties, and protection against Ultra
Violet (UV) radiation. They posses moisture management abilities with enhanced
fabric durability. They are widely used after cosmetic surgery.
Compression garments helps to
break down the lactic acid, and provide additional support to the body by
contouring to the body part. These garments enable the wearer to delay in
developing fatigue while in sports activities that inv multiple washes ole high
aerobic components and intense work activities. Adaptability of these garments
in sports field is still at the nascent stage. Due to their virtues, and
benefits, these garments will be scooped by more apparel or medical device
companies soon.
