The Textile sector has been evaluated by the Textile Ministry taking into
consideration, the prices at month-end to evaluate the performance of the sector.
In this report the Handloom specific data has been segregated in order to
provide a comprehensive view of this particular sector.
To boost cotton trade, the Government of India has taken
measures like liberalizing raw cotton exports since July 2001, providing with
the system of allotment of cotton export quota in favor of different agencies
and traders. Exports of cotton from the country are under Open General License
(OGL) since July 2001. Due to these efforts, during the year 2008-09, the
cotton exports from the country reached at US$ 850 million including 35 lakh
bales.
