Replacing Synthetic Materials in Automobile Upholstery with Natural Comfort and Hygiene Materials

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF UPHOLSTERY LEATHER:

The physical properties for upholstery purposes are high tensile strength, resistance to tear, high resistance to flexing, high resistance to puncture, good heat insulation and resistance to fire.

Disadvantages: Leather is poor absorber of moisture. It retains heat. Leather tends to swell on long with moisture on its surface. Leather when not treated properly would produce bad odour. In automobile upholstery leather cover cost handful. The upholstery retains heat in summer season. Leather is obtained by killing animals, and it is not eco-friendly due to wastage discharge during the production.

COIR: Coir fibres are extracted from the husks surrounding the coconut.

Disadvantages: At present coir mat are not widely used in automobile seats, due to high production of heat. Coir retains heat for long time, gets compressed soon and coir is poor absorber of moisture when it is matted.

FOAM: Foam is artificial product manufactured on different basis; they have become such a widely used material because it provides a unique combination of form and function. It's light, quiet, resists mildew, and won't aggravate common allergies. The foam can easily be cut or molded to almost any shape. At the same time, foam can be made to provide very supple or very firm cushioning for any given application.

Support: The foam has to be able to support the proper amount of weight to properly cushion an object or person.

Comfort: foam cushioning has to feel good to the user and provide not just cushioning but also comfortable use.

Disadvantages: Foams are manufactured by mixture of chemicals, foam is not degradable and foam lacks resistance to mildew.

 

CUSCUS GRASS: Vettivera is used to maintain a soft core bed cushion.

It acts as the coolant in the cushion. Gives out sweet fragrance. It is a natural product. Vettivera is stuffed inside the cushion as a major part.

 

 

 

 

 

 


SISAL FIBERS:

Sisal is used to bind the vettivera as mat. It acts as the core strength product. Avoids formation of fungus and mildew. Sisal has very good strength.
