Abstract

The Indian textile industry has an overwhelming presence in the economic life of the country. It plays a pivotal role. Apart from providing the basic necessities of life, the textile industry also contributes to industrial output, employment generation, and export earnings of the country. The findings of the analysis are summarized here; it is observed from the study that the production of textiles in India is rising, such as production of yarn, fabrics, and cloth. It also calculates partial productivity and notes increasing exports and imports in the international market. When evaluating the performance of a production unit or the industrial sector, it is common to use production (the level of output), productivity (output per unit of input), or efficiency (actual output relative to the potential output or best practices) as indicators. Although these measures are closely related, they can yield different rankings in measuring performance. The textile industry occupies a vital place in the Indian economy and contributes substantially to its export earnings. Textile exports represent nearly 30 percent of the total exports.

Introduction

Since the advent of human civilization, textiles played a significant role in human life. It is the oldest and largest industry in India, established over a hundred years ago. After the ravages of the Second World War, every country is industrializing fast, and the establishment of basic industries and self-sufficiency in the country's needs was the main objective in the early fifties.

Textiles are the only industry that is self-reliant from the production of raw materials to the delivery of the products with substantial value addition at each stage of processing.

The Indian textile industry has an overwhelming presence in the economic life of the country. It plays a pivotal role. Apart from providing the basic necessities of life, the textile industry also contributes to industrial output, employment generation, and export earnings of the country. Thus, the growth and all-round development of this sector have a direct bearing on the improvement of the economy of the country. The cotton textile industry is the largest organized industry in the country.
