A leading group of business associations and other organizations announced that the third annual "Imports Work Week" will take place on May 5-9, 2014.

Imports Work Week is an effort to draw attention to the essential role imports play in the U.S. and global economy. For many years, May has been recognized as World Trade Month, with civic groups, business associations, and Democratic and Republican administrations seizing the opportunity to celebrate the important role of international trade in the U.S. economy. Imports Work Week is dedicated to discussing the positive value of imports in the trade equation.

The 2014 Imports Work Week will focus on the growing role of global value chains and how they can enhance the competitiveness of U.S. companies and benefit American workers and consumers. As part of Imports Work Week, numerous associations and think tanks are expected to highlight the important role of imports to their respective industries by publishing commentaries and blog posts, as well as participate in other grassroots and social media activities.

"Imports are a good indicator of economic health - they are a sign both of consumer demand and industrial activity," said World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Roberto Azevêdo on Imports Work Week. "For many American companies, imports provide essential component parts for their goods, often at prices which help them to remain competitive. By supporting companies to grow and export in this way, imports are a critical component of any vibrant economy."
