Pakistan is a big cotton producing country, but it lags far behind in the textile sector, and it is necessary to promote the textile industry in order to increase exports and strengthen the national economy, said Punjab state Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif at the recently held International Textile and Clothing Conference (ITC 2013) in Lahore.

While addressing the concluding session of the ITC conference, the Punjab CM said the textile industry needs to be strengthened in order to increase exports and fully benefit from the expected Generalized System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) status from the European Union (EU).

The textile sector of Pakistan is lagging behind Bangladesh and other neighboring countries, and in order to achieve due status among these textile producing countries, full attention needs to be given to the textile industry of the country which is very important for the economy, he added.

At the conference, Mr. Sharif also talked about the upcoming garment city project in Punjab, stating that the setting up of the garment city would not only develop the clothing sector but would also create hundreds of thousands of job opportunities in the state as well.

Minister of State for Commerce and Textiles, Engr. Khurram Dastagir Khan said during the ITC conference that the textile sector of Pakistan would have to harmonize with the demand of modern age for its progress.

It is important to encourage manufacturing of value-added products and the Federal Government is determined to strengthening the textile sector of the country, he added.

The first edition of the ITC conference, organized by the Punjab Board of Investment and Trade (PBIT) and the Punjab government, saw participation from around 300 officials representing various sections of the textile and apparel sector of Pakistan, including the Punjab CM, the Minister of State for Commerce, PBIT vice chairman Maratab Ali, Punjab CM’s Economic Affairs Advisor Ejaz Nabi and the Federal Secretary (Textile Division) Rukhsana Shah.
