TEA seeks R&D, incubation centres for textile clusters

Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) has requested the Central government to provide research and development centres, incubation centres and world-class design studios for technical textiles to successful textile clusters in the country. The association said that these infrastructure facilities can help in the growth of the textile sector.

Adequate infrastructure can also help the textile industry to foray into niche segments to create multiple other growth opportunities, said TEA in a pre-budget memorandum that it submitted to the Union finance minister Arun Jaitley.

The association has also urged the government to implement the Factories (Amendment) Bill, 2016 that has been passed in the Parliament to benefit the garment sectors and help buyers fulfil compliances, according to media reports.

President of the association, Raja M Shanmugham said that there is a need to build large-scale labour housing and hostels in the private-public partnership mode to encourage permanent migration of skilled labourers towards textile clusters.

An agency along the lines of Silk Board or Coir Board can also be formed for the knitwear sector to accelerate the growth of the segment. Tiruppur holds 46 per cent market share in knitwear exports and aims to increase its Rs 35,000 crore revenue to Rs 1 lakh crore by 2020, said Shanmugham. (KD)
