Accord members to continue sourcing from Bangladesh

Three weeks after a terror attack killed 20 people, mostly foreigners in Dhaka, the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh (the Accord), an alliance of major buyers of the European Union (EU), has reassured Bangladesh of buying apparels, but sought stricter security for foreign buyers.

During a meeting met with Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan in Dhaka on Wednesday, a delegation of the Accord reiterated the commitment to buying from apparels from Bangladeshi producers.

Representatives of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) were also present at the meeting..

The Accord delegation, led by its Executive Director Rob Wayss, conveyed told the Home Minister that they were concerned at the recent terrorist activities.

They also said that their members would continue usual business with the Bangladeshi apparel exporters. Wayss also sought security for the foreign buyers during their visit to Bangladesh.

The Minister assured the Accord delegation that the government attaches utmost importance to the issue of ensuring security, particularly to foreign apparel buyers.

Director General (DG) of Industrial Police Abdus Salam, who also attended the meeting, said the industrial police would provide all security to the foreign buyers during their visit to industrial areas.

Earlier this month, the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety that includes 28 North American retailers like Walmart and Gap, also said it would continue to source from Bangladesh despite the terror attack at a Dhaka restaurant on July 1. (SH)
