The Karnataka state government has given permission to Kerala-based Kitex Garments, part of the Anna-Kitex group of companies, to invest Rs 493 crore in a readymade garments unit in Hassan. The company plans to start commercial production by March 2019. The unit will be quickly set up by housing in an assembled steel building, imported from the Gulf.

The unit will have an initial capacity of 1,500 to 2,000 people. In Phase 1, it will produce up to 2-lakh pieces of infants garments, Kitex chairman and managing director Sabu M Jacob told a top Indian business daily. The expansion will be over by 2021 in six-monthly phases. The expansion costs will be met partly through internal resources and borrowings.

However, Andhra Pradesh is also aggressively wooing Kitex Garments.

Kitex produces 6.5 lakh pieces of finished garments per day, targeted at just-borns to babies up to the age of 24 months. It exports about 95 per cent of infant wear to the United States and the rest to Europe. The company also engages in contract manufacturing for private labels such as Jockey, Carter, Babies R Us, Gerber and Mothercare. (DS)
