The Tirupur Exporters Association has congratulated Union Mnister Ms Smriti Irani on allocation of Textile ministry and sought speedy notification of the guidelines and procedures for implementation of the Rs 6000 crore special package for the garment sector to boost exports.

Seeking the newly-appointed minister's intervention for to enable them avail the promised benefits “at the earliest”, TEA President Dr A Sakthivel said it would help them achieve the envisaged additional export target of US $ 30 billion in next three years besides generating one crore new jobs in the country.

Updating Ms Irani on their concerns, the TEA underlined the need of having a separate Rs 1000 crore fund for market promotional activities, mainly for participation in international fairs conducted outside India and within the country.

At present, the Commerce Ministry is providing only Rs.6 crore for the market promotion activities through schemes like Market Access Initiatives (MAI) and Market Development Assistance (MDA, TEA said in a press release implying that the sum was paltry compared to the $ 17 billion grossed by the sector in 2015-2016.

TEA also urged the minister to push for Free Trade Agreement (FTA) or at least Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Britain and 28 other EU countries, the lack of which were resulting in advantage to rival apparel exporting nations like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Vietnam.

The association pointed out that special trade deals with these countries and with Canada and Australia would enable them gain lost ground in promising markets of the down under besides resulting in a 30 percent increase in Indian garment exports. (SH)
