Prime Minister Theresa May’s speech on UK’s future economic partnership with the European Union outlined the right priorities, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). In her speech, May mentioned five tests for the Brexit deal negotiations. She said Brexit is not an end in itself, and added that an optimistic and confident future can unite all.

The five tests for the deal that the UK will negotiate with the EU are: “Implementing the decision of the British people; reaching an enduring solution; protecting our security and prosperity; delivering an outcome that is consistent with the kind of country we want to be; and bringing our country together, strengthening the precious union of all our people.”

Responding to the speech, Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, said: “This speech outlined the right priorities. The retail industry wants trade to be as frictionless as possible to sustain low prices, good availability and choice for consumers. The government’s intent to secure this is welcome.”

The Consortium will seek to work with the government and all political parties over the next few months to develop the detail on a migration system that works so that the retail industry can continue to deliver the goods consumers want, when they want them, said Dickinson. (RKS)
