The first round of a tripartite meeting in Cambodia to negotiate a new minimum wage for garment and footwear workers concluded in a deadlock recently as vocational training officials and representatives of trade unions, employers and the labour ministry could not reach a consensus. The stakeholders requested more time to discuss the matter.

While pro-workers unions, led by president of Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers’ Democratic Union Ath Thon, demanded $211.94 as the minimum monthly wage for next year, pro-government unions opposed it, according to a Cambodian newspaper report.

The current minimum monthly wage is $170.

The parties, which will meet again on September 14, considered key factors like working conditions, prevailing economic and political climate inflation and cost of living. (DS)
