In order to solve the housing problem faced by female garment workers in ready-made garment (RMG) industrial areas like Ashulia, the Bangladesh Government has decided to build dormitories for these workers.

The Government has directed the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) to carry forward the task.

The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs (MoWCA) has already acquired one acre land in Ashulia for the purpose and has submitted a proposal to the Bangladesh Bank seeking financial assistance in this regard.

It is planned to construct a 10-storied dormitory with an outlay of Tk 250 million, by 2015.

According to BGMEA research cell, around three million women workers are engaged in 5,000 RMG units in the country.

The Ministry believes that the RMG workers contribution to the country’s economy cannot be overlooked, and it is their prime duty to provide the workers with better living conditions, and the construction of dormitories is a step towards the same goal.

Considering development of the domestic garment industry, the Government has also decided to set up of a modern ‘Garment Palli’, which would have health centres, markets and educational institutes, in addition to residential facilities.
