A Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) delegation has appreciated efforts taken by Tirupur Exporters' Association (TEA) to implement zero liquid discharge (ZLD) in the knitwear hub.

The BGMEA delegation led by Faruque Hassan, senior vice president, BGMEA and other Bangladeshi exporters visited two common effluent treatment plants in Tirupur which have zero discharge facilities.

“The delegation was in Tirupur to discuss implementing zero liquid discharge in their effluent treatment plants in Bangladesh,” a press release from TEA stated.

President of TEA, Dr. A Sakthivel shared the challenges faced by the Tirupur exporters in implementing ZLD and recalled the intervention of the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in helping the same.

Faruque Hassan appreciated the efforts taken by Tirupur for implementing ZLD facilities and added that they had not seen anywhere in the world, the recovery of salt and water simultaneously.

He also lauded the online monitoring system installed by the Pollution Control Board and said the Bangladesh Government is very keen to implement ZLD in their ETPs.

BGMEA has hired the services of Institute for Industrial Productivity, an NGO based in USA to advise and implement the same.

Since, the Tamil Nadu Water Investment Company (TWIC) helped Tirupur CETPs for implementation of ZLD; the Institute has approached them and signed a MoU with TWIC. (AR)
