Bangladesh's garment makers concerned over gas crisis

Garment makers in Bangladesh have expressed their concern over the sudden stoppage of gas supply to manufacturing units in Panchabati-Muktarpur industrial belt in Narayanganj district.

Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) said production in at least 400 units that include knitting, dyeing and finishing plants has been suspended owing to sudden stoppage of gas supply from Saturday without any advance notice.

The Association said the gas suspension may lead to workers' unrest in the area as sweater factories in the area employ several workers on a wage-per-piece basis. These workers will lose out on their wages owing to suspension of production due to gas supply stoppage.

BKMEA represents about 1700 knitwear manufacturers and exporters in Bangladesh.
