Clustering will benefit Bangladesh apparel & textile units

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s (BGMEA) University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) - Better Work in Textiles and Garments (BWTG) jointly organized a one–day workshop on “Development of National Performance Cluster” held on September 17, Wednesday at BUFT, Uttara, Dhaka. 

This one-day workshop provided the opportunity for dialogue and discussion to explore how a clustering strategy can be used to improve the competitive advantage of the Apparel Sector in Bangladesh. 
 
This workshop helped in gaining knowledge about clustering strategy and how the three technical centers of BUFT, NITTRAD, IART launched by BGMEA, BTMA and BKMEA could provide the coordinated technical, innovating and competitive cost effective demand driven services to the apparel and textile industries.
 
The workshop presided over by Mr. Muzaffar U Siddique, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of BUFT strongly recommended and emphasized the importance of creating a Cluster Board in Bangladesh to develop a national performance cluster.      
 
The workshop started with a welcome address given by Ms. Munira Rahman, National Coordinator, UNIDO- Better Work in Textiles and Garment (BWTG)”.  In the welcome speech, John Smith, International Coordinator, UNIDO-BWTG said `the National Performance Cluster will play an important role for the competitiveness of the Bangladesh Apparel and Textile Industry.
 
Dr. Lynne Hammond, International Expert from the London College of Fashion was the keynote speaker and explained the definition, principle and benefits of clustering. She focused how Turkey used clustering for their fashion/apparel business growth. The Bangladesh Ready Made Garment Sector has undergone dramatic changes over the last few years but needed to adopt an agile approach to fashion supply chains.
 
The workshop was attended by Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Designate) of BUFT, Mr. David Holbourne, Chief Technical Advisor, UNIDO, Mr. Shameem Ahmed, Vice Chairman of BKMEA and also members of UNIDO-BEST Program, representatives from government & nongovernment organizations, many entrepreneurs from mid and high level RMG units, Registrar, faculty members and admin officials of BUFT.
