In the post quato era several developing countries are seeking to get another chance to set up their textile sectors. Mauritius textile industry also expects that the quotas will put off Chinese manufacturers from cornering them out of the deals with its US customers.

The U.S. government announced on Friday to re-impose restrictions on cotton-knit shirts, cotton trousers and man-made fibre underwear to limit a surge in imports from cheap producers in China.

Commercial representative for Mauritius in Washington Peter Craig stated ",This is great news for Mauritius. It will give our industry a breathing space."

"It will have a snowball effect. Other countries like the European Union may follow the USA and impose quotas on Chinese garments," he added.

Mauritius is also one of the producers of cotton-knit shirts and trousers, thus it hopes that the quotas help to retain its development in the sector.

Chairman of the Mauritius Export Processing Zone Association Ahmed Parkar said ",We are very happy about this decision.”

The Mauritius textiles industry provides 68,000 employment, with nearly 250,000 indirectly employed in textile sector, accounts 9 pct of gross domestic product.

As per the figures provided by Central Statistics Office, exports of garments in year 2003 were worth of 8.4bn rupees, which decline to 7.3bn in year 2004.

The safeguard measures will restrict China's exports to the US of the certaintextextile category to 7.5 pct growth per year, which will be effective from end of this month.
