Illegal uniform sweatshops exploit Asian workers

Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union (TCFUA) is keeping an eye on illegal backyard sweatshops making school uniforms, which function in garages and sheds. Queensland based union has found that sweatshops employ Asian workers at a mere $3 per hour.

Secretary Jack Morel informed the media that part time workers in the country are supposed to get $15.88 per hour. Employers are also depriving sweatshop workers of medical benefits and pension.

Sweatshops do not maintain records and have no commitments. They are proving to be a risk for legal uniform makers paying proper wages and pensions.

Schools had been requested not to purchase from these sweatshops. But TCFUA discovered that sweatshops are still manufacturing uniforms and few schools are taking any precautions.

Majority of the illegal sweatshops are located in western and southern suburbs of Brisbane.
