Authorities, from the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia, will have a meeting with the union members to reaffirm their stand on the country's new minimum wage and try to prevent the strike.

GMAC had organized a meeting with the President of the Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers Democratic Union, Mr. Ath Thun – the most active union member, to make clear the industry's stand on minimum wage.

A group of Govt officials and representatives of industry – the Labour Advisory Committee, sanctioned a US $5 hike on the monthly minimum wage of apparel workers in the month of June. This raised the minimum wage to $61 per month. Ath Thun and other union members, however, have asked for fresh talks on the issue.

GMAC has asked all the concerned parties to follow the decision of the Labour Advisory Committee. Ath Thun is optimistic about the efforts of GMAC to reduce the pressure and reassess its stance on the issue. He is hopeful that the meeting will come out with a favourable solution.

Ath Thun and other union leaders assert that, they have thumb impressions of around 60,000 workers, who have taken the resolution to go on strike to oppose the new minimum wage. Ath Thun anticipates over 100,000 workers to participate in the demonstration to raise the wages.

GMAC Secretary General requested the workers to re-examine their plan on strike as this would seriously upset the entire industry. He further said that the workers' demands were unreasonable.

Loo added that the strike will be harmful for the industry as well as the economy. In addition, the workers should think gravely whether it is justified to forgo their current income for the sake of something which may or may not be achievable.
