Unions urge factory owners to pay outstanding wages to the deceased

The Cambodian Confederation of Unions (CCU) had recently forwarded a letter to the Garment Manufacturing Association of Cambodia (GMAC) with a request to help them make sure that the outstanding wages of the workers who lost their lives in Diamond Island stampede are paid to their kith and kin.
CCU, which is apprehensive about the factory owners not paying out the last due wages of the deceased workers to their families, has resolved to monitor the matter.
GMAC too has evoked the factory owners to pay the outstanding wages of the deceased workers, but then the factories have their own set of rules to follow in such a situation.
GMAC has also remarked that, even without the union's interference, it is capable of helping the workers. Each of the factories will reserve the wages of workers who lost their lives in the stampede, which will either be delivered to their homes, or the family members of workers may even personally collect the same from the factory.
As per the GMAC record, 26 workers had lost their lives in the stampede, while 60 had been injured and two of them are still missing.
However, according to CCU, there were 20 workers who had lost their lives, while 32 had been injured and 15 still missing. The Coalition of Cambodian Apparel Workers' Democratic Union reported that 35 had died and 33 had been injured.
