In view of the swift expansion of the garment industry, the apparel industry in Sri Lanka is eyeing to get in another 20,000 to 30,000 workers in the sector over the next five years.

M P T Cooray, Secretary General of Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) revealed that majority of the rural youth who work in the trade zones, confront difficulties because most of the times they need to spend extra sum on boarding and food.

In view of this, JAAF is trying to ease the difficulties of the rural youth by providing them employment in the factories in their areas of residence.

The JAAF official said that, owing to the swift expansion of the garment units, some vacancies have come up in different segments of the apparel sector. Moreover, some of the leading garment firms are close to acquiring some of the closed units in the country, which is looked upon to aid the apparel sector to have a stable workforce.

Further though, there are around 80 percent of women employed in the apparel sector, the figure is slowly coming down due to several reasons, and also it is the liability of the authorities to wipe up the negative social impression about the female workers in the sector.

He even revealed that, around 1,850 applicants willing to join the apparel sector dropped their applications at the JAAF stall set up at the recently held Deyata Kirula exhibition. The JAAF authorities are now reviewing the applications, which after processing would be handed over to the concerned factories for their review.

Presently, the industry employs around 400,000 workers across its entire value chain.
