Cambodian labour minister Ith Sam Heng recently told the ministry’s annual meeting that the country’s garment sector grew by 4 per cent last year to reach $7.6 billion, which marks a relative growth rate slowdown. According to government statistics, the sector grew by 7.2 per cent in 2016 to $7.3 billion, up from $6.8 billion the year before.

This is the first official reporting of 2017 export data for the sector, though the customs department under the ministry of economy and finance has not released data from the second half of 2017.

The slower growth rate was anticipated by industry representatives, according to a report by a top Cambodian newspaper. (DS)
