Adidas steps in the crease as new kit sponsor for Indian cricket team

While no financial details or terms were shared, this follows an interim sponsorship by apparel brand Killer Jeans and a premature end to the MPL Sports deal in 2020.

Renowned German sportswear brand Adidas is slated to become the new kit sponsor for the Indian cricket team. The official announcement was made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today.

Jay Shah, the secretary of BCCI, confirmed this sponsorship deal through a tweet, but did not disclose any specifics regarding the financial aspects or the tenure of the agreement.

“I'm pleased to announce BCCI's partnership with Adidas as a kit sponsor. We are committed to growing the game of cricket and could not be more excited to partner with one of the world’s leading sportswear brands. Welcome aboard, Adidas,” Shah tweeted.

The new sponsorship deal marks another significant shift for the Indian cricket team's branding. In 2020, the BCCI inked a three-year deal with the sports merchandise brand of Mobile Premier League (MPL Sports). This deal had replaced the team's long-standing association with Nike, the American sportswear manufacturer.

However, the MPL Sports deal ended prematurely, which necessitated another change in the team's kit sponsorship. Consequently, Killer Jeans, a popular clothing brand, served as the interim sponsor for the Indian cricket team. As per the terms of this interim arrangement, Killer Jeans' contract is set to expire on May 31, 2023, paving the way for Adidas to step in as the new kit sponsor.
