Cambodia will launch a scheme to offer financial support to workers laid off during the economic downturn. Prime Minister Hun Sen has told the ministry of labour and vocational training and the ministry of economy and finance to work together with textile and garment factory owners on compensation for 32,000 workers laid off due to factory closures.

Over 70 Cambodian factories had closed down, leaving 32,023 workers unemployed, of whom 26,055 were women, according to ministry of labour spokesman Heng Sour.

A recent meeting decided that suspended workers will receive cash support of $70 per month from April this year for the duration of suspension, minister of labour and vocational training Ith Sam Heng was quoted as saying by Cambodian media reports.

The government will contribute $40 and the factory will sponsor $30.
