Canada joins Sustainability Compact initiative

Canada has joined with the Sustainability Compact, an international initiative to improve the sustainability of the garment industry in Bangladesh.

"Canada is a proud supporter of the reform of the ready-made garment sector. Canadians are wearing clothes made in Bangladesh, and they want to be assured the garments are made in fair and safe working environments," Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Benoit-Pierre Laramee said in Dhaka according to an agency report.

For this reason, he said, Canada associates itself with the Sustainability Compact to work more closely as a partner and support the Bangladeshi Government to make working conditions in the country even safer.

"We have remained engaged with the commitments of the Sustainability Compact through $8 million (Canadian) in support to the joint Government of Bangladesh and International Labour Organization project Improving Working Conditions in the Ready-Made Garment Sector in Bangladesh," Laramee added.

The Government of Canada continues to encourage Canadian companies to respect the international instruments on Corporate Social Responsibility and recently signed the G7 commitment on responsible supply chains.

Canada has been a committed player to the reform of the ready-made garment sector since 2013.

The "Sustainability Compact for continuous improvements in the labour rights and factor safety in the Ready-Made Garment and Knitwear Industry in Bangladesh" was agreed in July 2013 by Bangladesh, the European Union, the International Labour Organization and the US. (SH)
