The Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF) Council of Fiji is expecting entry of new players in the garment industry, said council president Kaushik Kumar. A number of players have shown interest to join the Fiji garment industry. The council is also in favour of increasing the number of players. At present, there are more than 40 garment industries in Fiji.

The council is also hopeful of stable exports for 2017 and is planning to explore new markets in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), said Kumar. MSG is an intergovernmental organisation, composed of the four Melanesian states of Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, and the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front of New Caledonia. MSG promotes economic growth among Melanesian countries.

The garment factories in Fiji have already invited applications for various positions ranging from machinist to workers, according to a Fijian leading daily. It is difficult to meet the deliveries on time as the workers who go for leave around Christmas and New Year do not come back when the factories reopen, said Kumar. Finding skilled labour remains a challenge in our industry, he added. (RR)
