IMRG Capgemini UK Eretail Sales Index up 19% in July

High discounting by UK retailers through July 2016, drove up the IMRG Capgemini Eretail Sales Index, which reported an online sales growth of more than 19 per cent year over year in July 2016, a 20 month high for the Index. However, the average basket value of goods purchased online, dropped from £80.52 in June 2016 to £78.39 in July.

According to a Capgemini press release the discounting may have been influenced by a need to compete with Amazon Prime Day on July 12. The world's biggest online retailer had later announced that customer orders in July 2016 exceeded Prime Day 2015 by over 60 per cent across worldwide markets.

The Capgemini report added that overall garment and footwear sales grew over 22 per cent, of which, accessories rose 33 per cent, footwear 24 per cent, lingerie 31 per cent and womenswear 21 per cent, which were all above the average yearly growth.

The Index growth registered in July was in part brought by a boost in sales growth for omni-channel retailers, who recorded over 19 per cent growth rate in online sales, a 13 month high, while pure online retailers also reported sales growth of over 18 per cent from a year ago period. (AR)
