Two top Uttar Pradesh (UP) government officials visited Tamil Nadu’s Tiruppur ahead of the UP Investors Summit on February 21-22 to invite knitwear factory owners to invest in a textile cluster planned in their state. They visited several garment manufacturing units and had a discussion with members of South Indian Hosieries Manufacturers Association (SIHMA).

Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, secretary to UP chief minister, and Sunil Yadav, assistant director of handloom and textiles, invited the Tiruppur-based industrialists to participate in the investors summit, according to a report in a top Indian English-language daily.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha have sent their representatives to woo the industrialists.

The officials said their state had plans for a special purpose vehicle (SPV) and textile parks to establish the needed infrastructure, according to SIHMA joint secretary Shashi Agarwal.

The industrialists, however, feel it would not be easy for other states to replicate Tirupur’s successful model. (DS)
