India will soon roll out a size project for Indian apparel on the lines of the United States, the United Kingdom and the European countries, according to textiles minister Smriti Irani. Addressing the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gandhinagar recently, she said lack of a country-specific standard for apparel size and measures is a big challenge for India.

A formal announcement regarding that will be made soon and the government will carry out a study on the issue, Indian media reports quoted her as saying at the conclave.

The government will also initiate a statistical study on domestic demand to frame better textile policies and strengthen industry and manufacturing in future, she said.

Work is under way to address embedded taxes under the goods and services tax (GST) regime and the demand for increase in rebate on state levies (ROSL) to boost exports that was earlier cut down by the government, Irani said. (DS)
