President of the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI) Rahul Mehta has said that the readymade garments could grow at 10 to 12 per cent in the domestic market this year, according to a press release of the association.

Mehta said that 2015 was largely uneventful year for the readymade garment sector with neither spectacular growth nor any dramatic fall in the domestic market. “I see a reasonable 10 – 12 per cent growth in 2016 in the domestic market, with women's wear and kidswear growing at a faster rate. Organized retail will continue to grow and MBOs will continue to be under pressure,” he said.

His comments came at the recent National Garment Fair in Mumbai. Mehta also said readymade garments should be included in the merit list of GST, according to the CMAI press release.

The National Garment Fair drew 283 exhibitors displaying over 330 brands. Approximately 15000 retailers and trade visitors from all over India visited the two-day Fair. The exhibitors at the fair displayed a wide range of Men's wear, Women's wear, Kidswear, Ethnic wear, Intimate wear etc showcasing their Spring/Summer 2016 Collection.

Textile Commissioner Kavita Gupta who inaugurated the fair said the Draft New Textile Policy is ready and would be announced soon. Referring to Textile Parks she said that 72 Parks have been approved but less than 30 are operating at optimum scale while the remaining Parks are lying idle. The Government wants to make these Parks fully operational.

Gupta also said that given the readymade garment Industry's high employment generation, the Government is giving 15 per cent capital subsidy to the garment industry compared to10 per cent to the other sectors of the textile Industry.

The Textile Commissioner also said that with a 13 per cent share, technical textiles sector is emerging as a sunrise sector with a projected growth of 20 per cent year-on-year. (SH)
