New garment factory in Nigeria's Calabar to employ 3000

A new garment factory coming up in Calabar, a city in Cross River state of south southern Nigeria, will employ 3,000 people, Cross River governor's office has said.

The new garment factory, which is part of the business cluster comprising four different ventures, is set for commissioning by Nigerian president Mohammadu Buhari soon, Christian Ita, special assistant on media and chief press secretary to governor Ben Ayade told journalists, Vanguard reported.

Widows will be given preference in employment in the factory that will produce uniforms for customs and police, as well as t-shirts for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) among others, Ita said after reviewing the progress of the business cluster.

Many young people from the state are already benefiting from the upcoming factory because of the ripple effect, said Ita.

Earlier this year, the British government had expressed its willingness to train the needed manpower for the take-off of the Calabar Garment Factory. (RKS)
