Thread Works sets up new garment unit in Sri Lanka

Thread Works Pvt. Ltd. has established a new garment manufacturing facility at Angulana near Moratuwa city in southwestern Sri Lanka, with an investment of SL Rs. 75 million.

The new unit has enhanced the production capacity of Thread Works, and is expected to help the company not only retain its lead in the domestic garment sector but also to compete in international markets.

Thread Works is a vertically integrated company that undertakes fabric knitting and weaving as well as distribution and retailing of apparels.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, Mr. Gehan De Soysa, Chairman and CEO, Thread Works P. Ltd, said, “The new plant has become operational since October 2011 and this has increased our production capacity to about 0.5 million pieces per month.”

“We manufacture garments for our own in-house brands like Velona, Arista, Body Fit, Top Gear, Superknit, etc. Our brand Velona is one of the oldest and biggest brands in Sri Lanka. It has been there for around 70 years now. Since 2008, we have been manufacturing and introducing new ranges in the market under the brand name Velona as well as under other brands that we already own,” he explains.

Sharing his views about Sri Lankan garment sector, he says, “The apparel sector in the local market is not very organized. There are a lot of players in the market, but the market is very good for those brands which have already established themselves in the market over the last 20 years. Right now, it is very difficult for new brands to come and establish themselves.”

Talking about future prospects for his company, he opines, “Velona is an established brand and we have been growing in terms of volume. We are definitely looking at growth in 2012 and beyond.”
