In spite of severe power and energy crunch, knitted garments exports from Pakistan for the current fiscal is likely to exceed US$ 2.25 billion, which would be the highest export growth ever posted by any of the Pakistan's value added textile sectors.
Knitted garments export, besides being a significant source of foreign exchange generation for Pakistan, is also the biggest employment providing sector across all the manufacturing industries in the country.
Power and gas outages have severely affected the country's knitwear industry, and have compelled the exporters to stop accepting new orders owing to their inability to timely fulfil the same.
With a view to boost effective utilization of the available energy, the Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA) organized a seminar on 'Energy Efficiency' in Lahore. At the seminar, the firms involved in providing energy saving programmes gave tips and suggestions to its members about more effective use of energy.
Further, the PHMA called upon the Government to give adequate importance and solve the country's energy issues to safeguard a large number of jobs and also to reverse the ongoing trend of shifting the knitwear units outside the country.
