Clothing imports from EU to attract zero import duty

A draft by the Albanian government has proposed to withdraw the import levy imposed on clothing imported from the member states of the European Union with effect from January 1, 2012.
The import duty at the rate of 10 percent is currently being levied on imports of garments. This measure is expected to reduce the retail prices of apparel products.
Albanian clothing importers pay around € 7 million in imports duties annual to the government, inclusive of VAT.
The draft also includes a proposal to withdraw imports duties imposed on import of raw materials by the Albanian garment sector.
The draft will be voted in the Parliament, before being implemented.
