A programme to boost Vietnamese garment, leather shoes and decoration wood industries at a cost of US$ 4.3 million will be sponsored by Italy, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has said.

The three sectors would be provided assistance in the field of product promotion, design technologies, cost management systems and marketing campaigns. Provision for training would even be available for the firms participating in the three million euro programme, UNIDO said.

As stated by UNIDO, in spite of the three segments being amongst Vietnam's leading export segments, the businesses in these sectors still greatly rely on their foreign associates for raw inputs and designs.

Next to China, Vietnam ranks second in footwear exports across the globe, and is placed amongst the world's top ten textiles and apparel exporting countries. The country exported footwear worth over four billion USD and textiles and apparels worth over nine billion USD in 2009.

During the same year, Vietnam's exports to Italy mainly constituting garments, furniture, footwear and seafood items touched the one billion USD mark, as per the statistics of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam.
