RYU to announce patent pending closure technology

Respect Your Universe announced its first patent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. A patent is now pending for our proprietary waist closure technology. The patent filing covers the advanced design and materials used in our radical new closure system, primarily for use in competition and training shorts used by MMA practitioners of all levels.

The patent is being filed with the belief that RYU has successfully created a system that offers fighters superior comfort and maneuverability without having to sacrifice strength and reliability. The creation of the new technology answers the call from within the sport, for MMA specific garments that offer athletes a competitive advantage. RYU believes this is the first of several apparel innovations that will position the company as a leader in the sports apparel market. As with this patent filing, RYU intends to protect its proprietary technologies to increase company and shareholder value.

Respect Your Universe CEO Christopher Martens said of the patent filing: "When we started this company we knew the sport of MMA was young and there would be several areas where we could improve technology. One of the first things we did was reach out to the fighters. What we soon discovered was that almost universally the talk turned to the bulky uncomfortable layers of Velcro being used in the fight shorts. MMA rules forbid the use of string, metal and other hard materials, so the choices were seen to be limited. We knew right away, this was the first problem we needed to solve, and with our creation of this proprietary technology and our patent filing to protect it we believe we have risen to the challenge and are confident our hard work has paid off."

Respect Your Universe President John Wood said of the patent filing: "I train MMA, my friends train MMA, and we along with a select list of elite fighters have all been involved in the testing phase of the new technology. I can honestly say that what we have done is a breakthrough in terms of comfort, weight and strength. In my opinion: with the new closure technology, RYU fight shorts will be the obvious choice for MMA athletes. Moving forward we see many more opportunities to improve design and utilize new technologies in our garments that will help athletes train and compete to the best of their abilities."
