Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PRGMEA) Chairman Ijaz A Khokhar has put forward a proposal for establishing Federation of Pakistan Textile Industry (FPTI), as a forum of all textile industry associations.

The proposal for FPTI was mooted by PRGMEA Chairman during the first roundtable conference of industry stakeholders, which was attended by around 15 associations.

Representatives of cotton cultivators as well as the value-added producers and exporters who attended the meeting responded positively to the proposal.

A five-member committee was constituted and assigned the task of preparing a draft sheet of the objectives and vision for setting up of the FPTI.

Mr. Khokhar also proposed that the textile industry's achievement of attaining US$ 14 billion in exports during recently concluded 2010-11 fiscal needs to be commemorated, and added that the celebrations in this respect would be held at the Expo Centre Lahore immediately after Eid-ul-Futr and would be attended by Prime Minister as Chief Guest.

The PRGMEA Chairman was optimistic that in spite of a problematic situation stirring out of fall in cotton prices internationally, the conference would draw the industry stakeholders closer to each other in times to come.

The main aim behind organizing the conference, he said, was to devise a comprehensive policy for safeguarding the entire textile value chain, from the primary cotton cultivators to producers and exporters of value-added textile products, against the problematic situation arising out of decrease in cotton prices.

He recommended that the participants should adhere to 'fair play' in battling the adversities and stand by each other at the joint forum.
