Court orders action against five RMG factories

A High Court in Bangladesh has asked the government to initiate action against five readymade garment (RMG) factories located in Savar for releasing untreated water and polluting the surrounding air, water bodies, and agricultural lands.

These five RMG factories have been already fined by the Department of Environment (DoE) levying the same charge.

The HC issued the order in response to a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environment Lawyers' Association (Bela). The petition sought directives to the administration for closure of the polluting units.

The HC order gives three months time to the government to assess and submit a report on the financial and environmental damage caused by the factories releasing toxic waste.

The government has also been asked to explain within four weeks, why the functioning of the polluting units should not be treated as amounting to anti-public interest. During the period, the factory owners are asked to explain why they should not be ordered to compensate for the damage caused to the villagers.
