NSW Trade and Investment hosted a workshop on 1 September to boost the skills and export competitiveness of fashion industry businesses.

The workshop, in partnership with the Council of Textile & Fashion Industries of Australia and Austrade, was presented by Paula Rogers, who has 25 years experience in international supply chain management including product development, factory sourcing, production operations and sustainability governance.

The four hour workshop was a practical, hands-on event for about 20 companies to help them build their own business operations manuals.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner said the workshop was part of ongoing efforts supported by the NSW Government to help local designers develop more sustainable and successful businesses, and to grow an Australian fashion industry export cluster.

"Quarterly talks are being held to boost knowledge in areas including marketing, design and product development, operations, finance and logistics," Mr Stoner said.

"Important information is being shared in the development of export business plans, market specific products, international regulations and market expectations, unique selling points and innovation, and factors like ethics, sustainability, and environmentally conscious consumers."

Mr Stoner said the Australian textile, clothing, footwear and leather manufacturing industries were worth over $2.8 billion to the national economy in 2009/10.

"Over 17,000 Australian businesses are involved in the manufacturing of textiles, clothing or footwear products, with about 34 per cent located here in NSW," Mr Stoner said.

"NSW's competitive advantages include access to quality raw materials and high technical innovation, particularly in computer-aided design and manufacturing, marking and grading systems, and quick response production systems.

"NSW is known for its strong creative talent in fashion and lifestyle product design and the NSW Government is determined to help fashion industry businesses prosper."
