Demand for Nepali garments on a rise in Europe

There has been a considerable rise in demand for Nepali garments in the European countries. During the initial 11 months of the last fiscal year that ended on July 15, 2011, readymade garment (RMG) exports from Nepal grew by 11.5 percent to Rs. 3.64 billion as against exports worth Rs. 3.24 billion during the corresponding period of previous fiscal.

This rise in overall exports is mainly driven by rise in demand for Nepali readymade garments with its distinctive handwork in European countries.

The rise in demand has induced garment producers in Nepal to consider value addition for existing products and to evolve with newer items within the garment segment.

Previously, Nepali exports mainly consisted of half pants, full pants and shirts, but now the focus is more on women's wear.

Presently, there is more demand for value added items with handwork incorporating a wide range of colours, made using different textiles, blend of colours and designs.

Value addition, to some extent, has spurred demand for Nepali RMG products, thus leading to a rise in its garment exports. In addition to this, rise in raw material prices has also led to an increase in the value of exported goods.

After value addition, Nepali goods gain more distinctiveness and competitiveness as compared to Chinese or Indian products.

In view of the current trend, experts feel that the Nepali RMG sector is now in need of enhanced trade facility and industrial security.
