Garment exports rise on increasing demand from US, EU

Garment and textile exports from Cambodia have risen during the initial eight months of the current year, owing to an increasing demand from the US and EU markets, the two leading export destinations for Cambodian garments.
According to the Ministry of Commerce data, garment and textile exports from the Kingdom during the review period grew by 19.6 percent to US$ 2.35 billion, against last year's corresponding period's exports of US$ 1.96 billion.
During the January-August period, the Kingdom's exports to the US grew by 13.2 percent from last year's US$ 1.14 billion to US$ 1.29 billion, while those to the EU surged 15 percent from last year's US$ 492 million to US$ 566 million, the data revealed.
According to Kong Putheara, Director of Ministry of Commerce Statistics Department, the positive trend of Kingdom's garment and textile exports to the US is likely to subsist all through the year.
He added that some of the Asian and European countries are considered to be strong markets for growth of the garment industry for the current year as well as for 2012.
The Ministry official said there is a further surge in demand for Cambodian garment items. Hence, with surge in demand from overseas markets, Kingdom's garment exports would keep posting positive growth this year as compared to the last year, he observed.
