There is an apprehension of labour unrest in Bangladesh if readymade garment (RMG) units fail to pay dues, wages and festival bonus before the Eid-ul-Azha to the workers, according to a report.
The report says around 200 garment units in the country have been identified as 'risky' and are likely to fail to pay dues to the workers before the festival. Of the 200 garment units, 62 are in Gazipur, while 29 are in Chittagong, 28 in Dhaka district, 26 in Narayanganj, 20 in Dhaka city, seven in Mymensingh, four in Tangail, two in Nilphamari and one in Bandarban.
The report calls for keeping a watch on these units so that the owners do not run away from paying the wages and festival bonus to the workers. In the event of non-receipt of wages before the Eid, workers may damage factories and blockade roads, the report adds.
In order to facilitate wage payments, garment factories have been asked to arrange loans through Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
Separately, leaders of labour unions have also asked the factory owners to pay the dues and festival bonus in time to enable workers to enjoy the Eid in a festive spirit.
