Japan's August apparel imports surge

Japan's apparel imports surged by 24.9 percent year-on-year in August 2011 to 234,782 million yen, according to Japan Textiles Importers Association, which compiled the figures based on trade statistics by the Ministry of Finance.

The quantity of apparel imports also increased to 391.34 million units, registering a rise of 19.3 percent year-on-year. China accounted for 86.6 percent of Japan's apparel imports by quantity during the month. In August, apparel imports from China grew by 15.3 percent year-on-year to 338.76 million units.

Value-wise too, China was the largest exporter of apparel items, accounting for 81.7 percent of Japanese imports in August. Apparel imports from China increased by 21.8 percent year-on-year to 191.9 billion yen, while imports from Indonesia and Bangladesh rose by 160 percent each to 3,436 million yen and 2,897 million yen, respectively.

Other countries from which Japan imported apparels during the period were Myanmar, Vietnam and India. Imports from Myanmar rose by 110 percent y-o-y to 2,853 million yen and those from Vietnam by 45.2 percent to 12,786 million yen. Imports from India, too, increased by 37.6 percent to 1,449 million yen.
