Philippines has once again got a chance to push for the passage of Save Our Industries Act (SAVE Act), as a team of US Congressmen is visiting the country to discuss with the Philippine Government officials on ways to intensify the trade ties between the two economies.
The delegation would also discuss various issues that may influence the allocation of foreign financial aid flowing from the US to Philippines.
The seven member US delegation headed by Harold Rogers, Chair Representative of the US House Committee on Appropriations, met Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario. The meeting was also attended by US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry K. Thomas Jr.
At the meeting, Mr. Rosario sought support of US legislators for passage of the Save Bill. He stated that the proposed law would be a mutually beneficial proposition as it would not only boost Philippine garment exports to the US, but also help US textile exports to grow.
The bill is aimed at earning duty-free access to the US for some categories of Philippine garments made from US fabric or yarn.
In turn, the members of the US delegation assured the Filipino Foreign Secretary that they would take up the matter for discussion with the members of the US executive branch and take necessary steps.
