Following the announcement of retrenching 1,500 jobs last week by Seardel, another clothing producer – Trubok plans to make 400 workers redundant.
These twin decisions have cast black clouds over the future of jobs in the South African textile and garment industry.
In a notice sent to the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU), Trubok said as part of a restructuring, it would lay-off around 400 workers.
It is expected that Trubok might merge operations of its four plants in Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Newcastle.
Trubok is a family-owned business established in the 1930s and specializes in men's and women's suiting, formal wear and casual wear, as well as corporate wear and healthcare apparel.
