Hirdaramani Group, a pioneer organization in Sri Lanka's booming garment industry, has acquired 'CarbonNeutral' certification for its 'Mihila' unit in Agalawatte, south of the country's capital Colombo.
The certification is expected to give the company an upper edge over its competitors, especially among environmentally conscious buyers, Hirdarmani said.
The 'Mihila' apparel manufacturing unit received certification based on a detailed greenhouse gas emission assessment conducted by the Carbon Consulting Company. The firm implemented measures to enhance internal energy efficiency and also invested in external carbon offsets to compensate for continuing emissions.
The company said the CarbonNeutral certification for its 'Mihila' factory is a beginning and the Group would continue with the process of assessing and reducing carbon footprint at other facilities of the Group.
The Hirdaramani Group has 28 manufacturing units in Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Bangladesh. The Group employs more than 30,000 people at various locations across six countries.
In recent years, the Group has diversified into other industries such as Leisure, Power, Information Technology and Retail Industries.
